Songor Lagoon covers 51,113 ha in the Dangbe East district of the Greater Accra Region. The area supports a seashore bird population estimated at 100,000, and 3 species of marine turtles, i.e. Olive Ridley turtle, green turtle and leatherback turtle. Degraded stands of mangroves (Rhizophora racemosa and Avicennia africana) are found along creeks.
In 1997, the human population was estimated at 30,000-50,000, with Ada Foah as the major township. The main economic activity is marine fishing, with lagoon fishing for tilapia and crab mainly for subsistence purposes. Crop farming involves cultivation of cassava, maize, tomatoes, okra, pepper, beans, onions and watermelons. Salt production in the dry season is another key activity for about 40% of the active population.
